Roberto Isaia, senior researcher from the Vesuvius Observatory, said the deadly cloud had “a temperature of over 100 C and was composed of CO2, chloride, incandescent ash particles and volcanic glass.”

“15 minutes in the clouds of hell is definitely endless,” Isaia told The Guardian.

“People couldn’t imagine what was happening. The people of Pompeii lived with earthquakes, but not eruptions, so they were shocked and swept away by the incandescent ash cloud,” he added.

The site was not excavated until 1748, when archaeologists were shocked to discover that deadly ashes had smothered a city and its inhabitants. (Dailystar)
