UGG Council Officially Proposes Ratification of Ijen Geopark as Unesco Global Geopark | merdeka.com

Merdeka.com – The UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG) Council has agreed to officially propose the Ijen Geopark (earth park) to be legalized as UGG. At a meeting in front of more than 73 observers and representatives of more than 20 member countries, Ijen along with six other geoparks from various parts of the world were proposed to be designated as the new UGG.

“Alhamdulillah, quoted from the official UNESCO website, Ijen (geopark) finally passed the trial and was immediately submitted to the UNESCO Executive Board for approval. Insha Allah, if nothing goes wrong, the determination will be around early next year,” said the Regent Banyuwangi Ipuk Fiestiandani, Sunday (18/9).

The page explains that the UGG Council has held a meeting in Satun Province, Thailand on September 4 and 5, 2022. They conducted an assessment of the submission of a number of new geoparks (including Geopark Ijen) and 28 re-validation of the existing UGG.

The page also explains that based on the UNESCO Global Geoparks operational guidelines, the council must submit a report on its work and decisions to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Bureau. The report will then be circulated to Member States and Member States of the UNESCO Association. Then the UNESCO Executive Board ratified the results.

Previously, it was known that the Ipuk Regent and the Ijen Geopark Agency had presented the Ijen Geopark proposal at an international forum entitled “The 7th Asia Pacific Geopark Network Symposium” in Satun Province, Thailand, 7 & 8 September 2022. The forum was a series of UGG Council meetings.

“Alhamdulillah, in the UGG board meeting it was decided to accept the proposal for Geopark Ijen to become part of the world geopark network. In December 2022, the UGG Council will hold a meeting to examine our submissions which are currently undergoing evaluation and re-validation. We will continue to monitor it together, ” said Ipuk.

Geopark sites that are being proposed to be established are Aras (Iran), Waitaki Whitestone (New Zealand), Kinabalu (Malaysia), Ijen and Maros Pangkep (Indonesia). Then there is Khorat (Thailand), Bohol (Philippines).

Ipuk again added that this achievement should not lead to the euphoria of pleasure, but invites all parties to immediately fix the things that are still lacking, so that Geopark Ijen’s UGG title can be immediately carried.

“We will sit down together to implement a number of recommendations from the UNESCO assessor team that need to be followed up,” said Ipuk.

“With its status as a global network of geoparks in the future, of course it will make Geopark Ijen a world tourist destination and will get greater attention, both in the tourism sector and in efforts to empower the community,” concluded Ipuk.
