Merdeka.com – Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) I, Pahala Nugraha Mansury said, the government continues to strive to escape the snares of sugar imports. This is because Indonesia still imports more than 4 million tons of consumption sugar and industrial sugar per year.
“This is certainly an ironic condition, because Indonesia has abundant natural strength and we can continue to optimize it,” he said at the launch of the flagship product of the Indonesia Plantation & Forestry Research Institute at the Agro Plaza Building, JakartaWednesday (21/9).
Until now, the main challenge for Indonesia is related to independence in the field of energy and food security. For this reason, the establishment of a subholding PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) III, namely Sugar Co or PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara can be an effort to increase production and efficiency of sugar commodities.
He also appreciated PTPN through its research institution, namely the Indonesia Plantation and Forestry Research Institute (IPFRI) which will soon release 6 superior sugarcane varieties and have a productivity potential of more than 10 tons of sugar per hectare.
With the existence of IPFRI along with its innovations, it is hoped that it will be able to answer the challenge of being able to make profitable and sustainable growth. “With our existing strength, we can continue to increase consumption sugar production. So that in the next 5 years, Indonesia can achieve self-sufficiency in sugar consumption,” he concluded.
