Merdeka.com – The President of the United States (US), Joe Biden stated that the threat of a nuclear apocalypse has increased recently compared to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. The threat of Russia using nuclear weapons after eight months of fighting in Ukraine was the main reason Biden stated that.
Biden has revealed that he knows Russian President Vladimir Putin very well. Putin’s threat to use nuclear was considered by Biden not a bluff.
“No kidding when he (Putin) talks about the use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons,” Biden said while attending a Democratic Senator’s Campaign Committee fundraiser, quoted from the Associated Press (AP) page, Friday (7/10).
“We haven’t faced an apocalypse threat since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Because the Russian military is – arguably – underperforming significantly,” Biden continued.
The US had previously warned Ukraine of the possibility of Russia using weapons of mass destruction due to recent setbacks on the battlefield.
Biden’s own words could not be clarified whether he and his government were aware of Russia’s intention to use nuclear. However, US officials said they had not seen any changes to Russia’s nuclear forces. The US has also not increased the preparedness of their nuclear forces.
“We see no reason to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture, nor do we have any indication that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons in the near future,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Biden explained that Russia’s use of low-scale nuclear weapons would also lead to a nuclear apocalypse.
“I don’t think there’s such a thing as the ability to easily deploy tactical nuclear weapons and not end up in the apocalypse,” he explained.
But Biden is still wondering about Putin’s power amid the decline of his troops in Ukraine.
“Where did he find a way out? Where does he find himself in the position that he is not only losing face but also losing significant power in Russia?” Biden said.
Putin had previously made it clear that he would use any means, including nuclear weapons, to protect Russia.
“I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction and when the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, in order to protect Russia and our people, we will definitely use all the means at our disposal. This is not a bluff,” Putin said.
But the US said Russia would suffer consequences if it used its nuclear weapons.
“This is something we align with, take very seriously, and communicate directly with Russia, including the kind of decisive response the United States would have if they went down that dark path,” said White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky also said the world would not forgive if Russia attacked with its nuclear weapons.
