Merdeka.com – A number of sub-districts in Garut Regency, West Java, Friday (15/7) night were hit by floods. Thousands of residents fled temporarily to safer places, and dozens more were trapped in their homes.
The Head of the Tarogong Kidul Sector Police, Kompol Alit Kadarusman, said that in his area the incident occurred in the Haurpanggung and Sukakarya villages. “The water level in Hauranggung reaches more than two meters because it is located near the Cimanuk River,” he said at the flood site.
As a result of the flood that hit, in two villages in the region, hundreds of houses were submerged by the overflowing water of the Cimanuk River. The overflow of the river water occurred after the rain that fell with a fairly high intensity from the afternoon until the evening.
“There are dozens of residents trapped in their homes in the Cimacan area, and at this time we and the joint SAR team are carrying out evacuation efforts using rubber boats. The evacuation process is facing obstacles because the water current is quite heavy at several points of the residents’ houses,” he said.
Based on the information gathered, flash floods occurred in a number of urban areas in Garut, from Garut Kota District, Tarogong Kidul, Cilawu, to Karangpawitan. Not only urban areas, other sub-districts such as Cikajang to Banjarwangi were also hit by similar incidents.
Until now, there has been no information on casualties due to the flooding that occurred. However, based on information circulating on social media, a resident was reported to have been carried away by the flow of water in the irrigation canal, but was rescued.
Currently, hundreds and an estimated thousands of residents have temporarily evacuated to locations that are safe from flooding. They choose to stay on the side of the road to find a place to rest like a mosque to the office police.
