Merdeka.com – A pilot died Friday after the water bomber he was flying crashed while battling blazes in the northern Portuguese town of Torre de Moncorvo, authorities said.

“It is with great dismay that I learn that a pilot died while operating a plane which later crashed… My deepest condolences to his family and friends,” Prime Minister Antonia Costa said on Twitter, as quoted by Antara. Reuters, Saturday (16/7).

Civil Protection Authority commander Andre Fernandes said there was only one pilot on board the plane, named the Fire Boss.

Various emergency services, including several vehicles and a helicopter, were immediately dispatched to the crash site – in the city of Foz Coa – at around 20:00.

Foz Coa Mayor Joao Sousa told the Lusa news agency that the pilot was pronounced dead at the place where the plane crashed.

The forest fires in Torre de Moncorvo, an area known for its mountains and rivers, are one of nine blazes that have engulfed various parts of Portugal.

The drought-hit country has been battling fires since earlier this week. [pan]
